Recently, Microsoft announced an important update regarding user consent management in Europe (EEA, UK, Switzerland). If you use Clarity on your website, here’s what you need to know and how to comply easily with Sirdata CMP.
1/ Microsoft Clarity: What Is It?
Microsoft Clarity is a free web analytics tool that allows websites to observe and understand visitor behavior. It offers advanced features such as heatmaps, which show the most clicked areas of a page, and session recordings, which allow you to visualize users' journeys in real time. These insights are invaluable for identifying areas of improvement on a website and optimizing the user experience. With Clarity, site owners can analyze user interactions and make data-driven decisions rather than relying on assumptions.
2/ A New Consent Requirement Imposed by Clarity
Microsoft has recently informed its users that it will now be mandatory to obtain explicit user consent before using Clarity cookies in certain regions, specifically in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. This requirement will take effect in early 2025 and aims to ensure compliance with local data protection regulations such as GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive.
This change is crucial because Clarity relies on cookies to link page visits to a single user session, providing accurate behavioral insights. Without user consent, these cookies can no longer be placed, which may impact key features such as session recordings and funnel analysis.
To comply with this new requirement, Microsoft now requires websites to implement the Clarity Consent API, a system that collects and transmits user consent before activating Clarity cookies.
